U.S. Tennis Center Names Ashe Stadium

Compiled From Wire Services

In a departure from the trend of selling naming rights for stadiums to corporations, the U.S. Tennis Association on Wednesday named the new stadium at the National Tennis Center for the late Arthur Ashe.

The stadium will be called Arthur Ashe Stadium to honor Ashe, who died in 1993 after contracting AIDS through a blood transfusion. Ashe won the 1968 U.S. Open, the Australian Open in 1970 and Wimbledon in 1975.

Ashe’s widow, Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, attended the news conference and noted that today would have been the couple’s 20th wedding anniversary.

The new stadium, part of the USTA’s $234 million expansion project, will be ready the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 25.
