Lakeside, Chewelah Get Northeast A Wins

Jeff Finke Correspondent

NEA basketball

In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion slept last night.

Until 2:55 remained in the fourth quarter, that is.

The second-ranked Lakeside Eagles saw a 17-point lead melt to just one before rallying for a 48-44 victory over a scrappy Colfax Bulldogs team in the girls Northeast A District basketball tournament Saturday at Mead High School.

The win sends Lakeside (21-1) into the championship game Friday night at 7. Colfax (18-5) will take on Newport (19-3) Tuesday night at 7 for the right to play Lakeside. Newport eliminated Deer Park (10-13) by a 43-34 margin. Colfax or Newport will have to beat the Eagles twice to gain the league’s only berth to the state tournament.

In boys action, Chewelah (16-7) topped Medical Lake (16-6) 50-39 to gain a spot in the championship game. Chewelah will face Lakeside (17-4), a 69-39 winner over Freeman (13-9), Friday night at 9 for the No. 1 seed to state.

Medical Lake and Freeman play a loser-out game Friday at 5 p.m. The winner will play the Chewelah-Lakeside loser Saturday at 7:30 p.m. for the district’s No. 2 seed to state.

In spite of the fact that Eagles and Bulldogs were involved, this contest was a game of cat-and-mouse.

Brianne Jolley, who was voted the NEA player of the year, scored nine of her 11 points in the second quarter as the Eagles took a commanding 26-14 halftime lead.

Two minutes into the second half the Lakeside lead was 31-14 and the rout was on. At least it seemed that way to everyone but the Bulldogs.

“We came up a little short,” said Colfax coach Terry Asbjornsen. “I was proud of the way we fought back, we didn’t roll over. We made a couple of mental errors down the stretch, but mainly we just dug ourselves too big of a hole in the first half.”

The Bulldogs got back into the game with a 11-0 run over a 7:20 span at the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth.

Jolley picked up her third and fourth fouls in the first minute of the fourth period. With her out of the game the Lakeside offense stagnated… until the 2:55 mark.

Nikki Petticrew buried a 3-pointer to put the Eagles up 39-35. After a Laura Widman baseline jumper pulled Colfax within two Janel Long sank a 3-pointer at the 2-minute mark to make it 42-37.

Jessica Hatch stretched the lead to 44-37 with a layup 30 seconds later and the Bulldogs would get no closer than the final score.

“I was really proud of the kids,” Lakeside coach Lisa Schultz said. “We didn’t shoot the ball well tonight, but we kept at it. Colfax is a tough team. They pack their zone in and force you to shoot from outside.

“I thought our defense did a good job keeping them from getting in an offensive rhythm except for a couple of minutes in the second half. We could have folded when they cut it to one, but the kids found a way to fight back.”

Petticrew finished with a game-high 13 points for Lakeside. Angie Hall had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Colfax.
