Top Seeds Strut Their Stuff In Girls Openers

District 9-B Tournament

The top seeds from the Whitman County and Blue Mountain leagues played up to form Saturday during openers of the girls District 9-B Tournament at Walla Walla Community College.

When the tournament shifts to Washington State University on Monday, Blue Mountain champion Waitsburg will play Whitman No. 2 St. John-Endicott, and Whitman champ Tekoa-Oakesdale meets Blue Mountain No. 2 DeSales for berths in the district title game.

Heather Cox scored 20 of her 26 in the second half as the second-ranked Nighthawks (20-3) topped the Spartans (8-12), despite a scoreless second quarter, for their 11th straight win.

Cory Nelson scored seven in the first quarter, and Kimberly Witte hit 6 of 6 free throws in the third quarter for Rosalia, which meets LaCrosse-Washtucna Monday in a loser-out game.

Tricia Lamb, Brooke Bafus and Jennifer Headlund combined for 16 fourth-quarter points to lead the fourth-ranked Eagles (19-4) over the Panthers (11-11).

Lamb, with 21 points, hit 1,973 for her career.

SJE outscored Asotin 17-3 at the free-throw line. Tara McNair scored 10 of her 28 in the second quarter for Asotin, which meets Garfield-Palouse Monday in a loser-out game.
