Obituaries

Verne Faires Colfax, Wash.

Service for Verne Ranscome Faires, 94, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Church of the Nazarene in Colfax. Burial will be at Colfax Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Faires died Friday at the Pinewood Care Center in Coeur d’Alene, where he had lived for the past three months.

He was born in Endicott, Wash., and graduated from Colfax High School and attended business school in Spokane.

Mr. Faires began farming after his father died and continued farming until he retired.

He was a member of the Colfax Church of the Nazarene, Steptoe Grange, St. John Grain Growers and the Whitman County Grain Growers.

He married Katie Goodwin in 1937. They raised nearly 30 foster children. She died in 1971.

Mr. Faires later married Myrtle Smith. She died in 1985.

He is survived by his wife, Opal Faires at the Hidden Pine Care Center in Rathdrum, Idaho; a stepdaughter, Grace Batey of Post Falls; and a brother, Burdette Faires of Colfax.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Nazarene Building Fund or Southeast Washington Home Health and Hospice.

Lawrence ‘Dick’ Enright Deer Park

Service for Lawrence “Dick” Enright, 97, is planned for 1 p.m. today at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Deer Park. Burial will be at the Catholic Cemetery in Deer Park. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Enright, a longtime Deer Park resident, died Sunday.

He was born in Clancy, Mont.

He married Alice Justice in 1926 in Spokane.

He worked for the Deer Park Sawmill, Kaiser Aluminum and the Washington State Game Farm before he retired from the Deer Park School District, where he worked as a custodian. He was a 40-year veteran of the Deer Park Fire Department and served as secretary-treasurer for many years. He was also involved with starting Deer Park Ambulance.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Bob Enright of Medical Lake; a daughter, Margaret Pluid of Spokane; eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Bettis Spokane

Service for Dorothy J. Bettis, 76, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Strate Funeral Home in Davenport, Wash. Burial will follow at Kennewick City Cemetery.

Mrs. Bettis, a former Kennewick resident, died Sunday.

She was born in Quincy, Wash.

She worked as a receptionist in a doctor’s office in Kennewick.

In 1970, her first husband, Jack Sullivan died.

In 1974, she married Clem Bettis and they moved to Spokane in 1975.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Jack Sullivan of Eugene, Ore.; a stepson Kirk Bettis of Spokane; a daughter, Judy Boljat of Vancouver, Wash.; , a stepdaughter, Connie Harrison of Sumner, Wash.; two brothers, Herman Schorzman of Roslyn, Wash., and Don Schorzman of Edmonds, Wash.; two sisters, Lela Strate of Davenport and Shirley Clark of Enumclaw, Wash.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Center.

Robert Lindstrom Spokane

Service for Robert L. Lindstrom was Monday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Burial was at West Greenwood Cemetery.

Mr. Lindstrom, 58, died Dec. 23.

He was born in St. Paul, Minn.

He worked as an electrician and had lived in Spokane for 24 years.

He served in the Marines during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Lindstrom is survived by two daughters, Jeanne Ward and Sandra Kelsey, both of Spokane; three sons, Thomas Lindstrom of St. Paul, and John and Aaron Lindstrom, both of Spokane; his mother, Mary Jane Lindstrom of Spokane; two brothers, Donald and Lawrence Lindstrom Jr., both of St. Paul; two sisters, Diane Burdash of Spooner, Wis., and Lavonne Jukich of Minn.; and six grandchildren.

Mildred Entwistle Spokane

Visitation for Mildred F. Entwistle, 87, is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Sullivan Park Care Center. Private burial will be at the Rice (Wash.) International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Mrs. Entwistle, who was born in Deer Park, died Sunday.

She was a resident of Spokane for more than 40 years and was a member of the Quillisascut Grange No. 372 of Stevens County.

She was a resident of Sullivan Park Care Center.

Mrs. Entwistle is survived by a son, John Entwistle of Moses Lake; a daughter, Lois Majors of Bothell, Wash.; and several grandchildren.

Marcella Wilson Colville, Wash.

No service will be held for Marcella Fern Wilson, 90. Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wilson, who died Sunday, was born in St. Louis, Ill.

She graduated from North Central High School in Spokane.

In 1927, she married Fred Wilson in Coeur d’Alene. They lived in Odessa, Wash., Portland and Spokane.

They moved to Ferry County in 1947 and later lived in St. Maries, Colville, Colfax and Kettle Falls, Wash.

He husband died in 1963 and Mrs. Wilson returned to Spokane, where she worked as a caretaker for a few years. She moved back to Colville in 1966.

She is survived by a son, Norman Wilson of Spokane; three daughters, Donna Stensgar of Grand Coulee, and Marlene Fry and Claudia Smith, both of Spokane; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Joanne Liebman Northport, Wash.

Memorial service for Joanne H. Liebman, 68, is planned for 11 a.m. Jan. 7 at Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville, Wash.

Mrs. Liebman, who was born near Northport, died Sunday.

She was a graduate of Northport High School.

In 1947, she married Raymond Liebman in Colville.

She worked as a clerk in the Northport Post Office for many years, and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Deep Creek HomeEc Club.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Patty Mathews of Spokane; two sons, Rick Liebman of Colville and Randy Liebman of Kettle Falls, Wash.; two sisters, Eunice Hinkle of Knoxville, Tenn., and Evelyn Lappano of Spokane; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Velma Shawgo Newport, Wash.

Graveside service for Velma Leo Shawgo, 82, is set for 2 p.m. Friday at Newport Cemetery. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Shawgo, who died Sunday at home, was born in Palouse, Wash.

She graduated from Priest River (Idaho) High School.

She had worked at Rainier Bank and retired in 1972.

Miss Shawgo’s survivors include a brother, Wilbur “Web” Shawgo of Newport.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Newport Cemetery.

Hilda Westrom Spokane

Service for Hilda Paulina Westrom, 83, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Messiah Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Westrom, who was born in Post Falls, died Dec. 21.

She had lived in Spokane for 80 years and worked at American Laundry.

Her husband, Harry, preceded her in death.

She is survived by a son, Gary Westrom of Salem, Ore.; a brother, Harvey Flansburg; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Alvie ‘Angel’ Carroll Spokane

Visitation for Alvie J. “Angel” Carroll, 73, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with private burial at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Carroll, who died Dec. 23, was born in Dover, Colo.

He was a member of Laborers Union Local 238 of Spokane.

He was a World War II veteran and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Eagles Lodge.

Mr. Carroll’s survivors include his wife of 44 years, Charlotte; five daughters, Mary Kraemer of Wenatchee, Cathy Burrow, Diana Norton and Sandy Warwick, all of Spokane, and Patty White of Moses Lake; three sons, John Kraemer of Prineville, Ore., and Mike and Robert Carroll, both of Spokane; two sisters, Averil Rockhold of Spokane and Lila Ogle of Colville, Wash.; two brothers, Lee Carroll of Spokane and John Carroll of Las Vegas, Nev.; and numerous grandchildren.

S.J. ‘Jack’ Tingley Spokane

Funeral Mass for S.J. “Jack” Tingley, 94, is planned for 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Tingley, a 55-year Spokane resident, died Sunday.

He was born in Great Falls.

He worked as a mechanic for General Tire Service for 25 years and owned The Caboose Tavern in Malden, Wash., with his wife for a few years.

He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church. His wife of 61 years, Helen, died in 1993.

Mr. Tingley is survived by a son, Eugene Tingley of Bothell, Wash.; a daughter, Loretta Dilley of Spokane; a brother, Kenneth Tingley of Portland; four sisters, Rose Taylor of Butte, Mont., Patricia Tingley of San Francisco, Daisy Kemp of Las Vegas, Nev., and Eullainee Riley of Spokane; 10 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Ervin Dennison Ione, Wash.

No service will be held for Ervin Joshia Dennison, 78. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dennison, who died Dec. 14, was born in Nelson, Wis.

He worked as a logger and had lived in Ione for 52 years.

He is survived by three sisters, Marjorie Dennison of Idaho, Ruth Cox of Plummer, Idaho, and Alice Wilson.

Charles Cook Spokane

Visitation for Charles A. Cook, 91, is scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Service will immediately follow at Pines Cemetery Mausoleum.

Mr. Cook, who died Sunday, was born in Pearl City, Ill., and was raised in Montana.

He worked as a lumberjack and then farmed in Trout Creek, Mont.

During World War II he worked for Remington Arms in Denver.

He moved to Spokane from Denver in 1945 and worked as a machinist. He also worked for Valley Bowl as a mechanic until he retired.

His wife, Erna Cook, died in 1987.

Mr. Cook is survived by two sons, Roger Cook of Mukilteo, Wash., and Jim Cook of Spokane; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Bonita Nodland Spokane

Memorial service for Bonita M. Nodland, 92, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Heritage Funeral Home. Private burial will precede at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Nodland, a longtime Spokane resident, died Sunday.

She was born in Marsalltown, Iowa.

She was a deacon at Knox Presbyterian Church and was a member of the McClure Circle at the church.

She was also a member of the Typographical Union Auxiliary, Order of the Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile.

Her husband, Ernest, died in 1974.

Mrs. Nodland is survived by two sons, Paul and James Nodland, both of Spokane; two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Knox Presbyterian Church.

Alice Curry Spokane

Private service for Alice M. Curry, a lifetime Spokane resident, will be held at a later date. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Curry, who died Sunday, had worked as a bookkeeper for Madran Bros. of Hillyard for more than 25 years.

She was a member of the 600 Club at Colonial Bowl and of the Eagles Auxiliary.

Survivors include a sister, Eleanor Coddington of Spokane.

Winnona Carpenter Spokane

Memorial service for Winnona M. “Winnie” Carpenter, 70, was Monday at First Church of the Nazarene.

Mrs. Carpenter, who was born in Spokane, died last Thursday.

She graduated from Holy Names Academy.

Mrs. Carpenter operated a real estate company and was also an entertainer and singer. She composed advertising jingles for Sound Recording Music Co. and had been an administrator for Madison North and Southcrest Convalescent Centers.

Mrs. Carpenter is survived by her husband of 21 years, Gene; three sons, Thomas Anderson, and Michael and David Clarke, all of Spokane; three daughters, Anne Clarke Bley of Spokane, and Suzanne and Mary Anderson, both of Seattle; three stepdaughters, Marilyn Hill, Gayle Cortner and Melody Roberts, all of Spokane; her mother, Ceilia Hamilton of Port Angeles, Wash.; 23 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Earl Qualls Spokane

Service for Earl J. Qualls, 90, is set for 1 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Qualls, who died Friday was born in Berwick, N.D.

He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps at Fort George Wright.

Mr. Qualls was a 67-year Spokane resident and retired from the Great Northern Railway in 1968.

He was a member of Deer Park Masonic Lodge No. 134, the Shrine and the Scottish Rite.

He is survived by his wife, Lenetta “Fritz” Qualls; a daughter, Earlene “E.J.” Ferguson of Spokane; two sisters, Zona White of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Ruth Gaugl of Santa Maria, Calif.; three grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Robert McCurtain Spokane

Graveside service for Robert W. McCurtain, 75, is planned for 1 p.m. Friday at Mountain View Cemetery in Davenport, Wash. Strate Funeral Home in Davenport is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McCurtain, who died Monday, was born in Wenatchee.

He grew up in the Spokane area and graduated from North Central High School.

He moved to Hawaii in 1955 and worked for the Atomic Energy Commission. He traveled between Las Vegas, Nev., and Hawaii with his job and retired in 1975, when he returned to Spokane.

Survivors include a sister, Lois Crouse of Newport, Wash.

Eddie Tesch Jr. Spokane

Memorial service for Eddie H. Tesch, 67, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Ritzville, Wash. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Ritzville, Mr. Tesch died Friday.

He graduated from high school in Milton-Freewater, Ore., and served in the Army in Germany during the Korean War.

He and his family operated Tesch’s Market in Ritzville and did custom butchering for area farmers.

He came to Spokane in the 1960s and worked for the Hygrade Meat Packing Plant.

Mr. Tesch was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Ritzville Jaycees and the Spokane Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Tesch; two daughters, Kay Westman and Polly Villa, both of Spokane; three sons, Henry and James Tesch, both of Spokane, and Eddie Tesch III of Medical Lake; two sisters, Louise Brewer of Ritzville and Agnes Bachman of Medical Lake; a brother, Dick Tesch of Washtucna, Wash.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
