French Open champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov broke his right hand working out in the gym and became the latest casualty to deplete the field of the Australian Open.

The Australian Open already had been hurt by withdrawals, most notably defending women’s champion Monica Seles and former men’s singles winner Andre Agassi.

Pete Sampras is the men’s top seed. No. 2 is Michael Chang. The women’s top seed is four-time champion Steffi Graf, with Arantxa Sanchez Vicario No. 2.
