Leftist Rebels Shoot From Envoy’s Home

Compiled From Wire Services

Leftist rebels fired eight gunshots on Monday from the Japanese ambassador’s residence, where they are holding 74 hostages, a day after plans for renewing direct talks between them and the Peruvian government fell apart.

Michel Minnig, an intermediary of the International Committee of the Red Cross, said no one was hurt inside the residence. Nestor Cerpa Cartolini, the leader of the rebels who seized the Japanese ambassadors residence 27 days ago during a party, said the shots were intended to ward off police officers who had gone past a security zone.
