Associated Press

Pac-10 roundup

Freshman sensation Corey Benjamin scored 18 of his 26 points in a second-half comeback Saturday night as young Oregon State stunned 15th-ranked Stanford 86-77 at Corvallis, Ore.

The loss knocked the Cardinal out of a first-place tie in the Pac-10. UCLA, a 48-point loser to Stanford earlier this season, is alone in first.

Oregon State snapped a five-game losing streak.

Ron Grady, another of the five Beavers’ freshmen who play regularly, added a season-high 24 points. A third freshman, point guard Carson Cunningham, scored 18, including nine of 12 free throws in the final 2:38. He finished 14 of 17 at the foul line.

Benjamin was 6 for 9 on 3-pointers.

Stanford’s Brevin Knight, bothered by a sore hip all night, had 16 points and eight assists. Peter Sauer added 15 points and Kris Weems 14 for the Cardinal. But 7-foot-1 sophomore Tim Young was just 2 for 4 from the field for five points, grabbed five rebounds and committing six turnovers.

Stanford led 39-34 at halftime, thanks to a 15-0 run that erased an early 30-22 deficit.

But Benjamin, coming off a career-best 31 points against California on Thursday, scored 16 in the first 9 minutes of the second half.

With Arizona ahead 75-73 in the extra session, Jason Lee committed his third, fourth and fifth fouls. That kept the Bruins busy at the line, where they converted nine of 10.
