Follow Her Advice, And You Can Be A Helen Girly

Compiled By Staff Writer Rick Bo

In her last issue as editor of Cosmopolitan magazine, 74-year-old Helen Gurley Brown shares her “life rules,” which include: “Men are not the enemy:

A good man, worthy of your love, is out there.”

“Sex is one of the three best things there is: I’m not sure what are the other two!”

“Success: There is something you can do better than anybody else … Find it.”

“Self-discipline: Do the rotten stuff first.”

“Popularity: Empathy is the most important social asset you can have.”

“All calories count: There is no free calorie, even in lettuce.”

“Beauty: Of course you’re preoccupied with your looks … So is everybody who looks at you.”

Loose talk

Martha Stewart, on her marital history (on America Online): “There WAS a Mr. Stewart. He flew the coop about eight years ago. He’s been replaced with 150 chickens, three dogs and five cats.”

And he’s still trying to keep on his toes

Mikhail Baryshnikov turns 49 today.

The assailant can run, but she can’t hide

Vogue magazine editor Anna Wintour was finishing lunch at the upscale Four Seasons restaurant recently when an angry animal rights activist pulled a dead raccoon from a shopping bag and flipped it onto her plate. “Anna wears fur hats!” the woman screamed before sprinting from the restaurant to a waiting cab.

Guess he hasn’t been completely cleared

Bobi Jewell, mother of former Olympic bombing suspect Richard Jewell, is still fuming over how some of the evidence was handled. “Every piece of Tupperware I own is ruined, thank you very much,” she told Vanity Fair. “They wrote numbers all over it, and I have tried everything to clean it - Comet and Brillo - but nothing works.”

Hey, it’s Martha Stewart’s brother’s living

Martha Stewart’s estranged brother, Frank Kostyra, sold gossip about her “secret life” to The Globe tabloid for $10,000 - and demanded more money when his photo ran with the piece, New York magazine reported. After he made a “considerable scene,” a Globe editor allegedly gave him $500 to go away. Contacted by New York, Kostrya said: “If YOU want any further information, you’ll have to pay.”

Even Richard Jewell wouldn’t touch that bomb

Among the celebrities who declined or never responded to an invitation to appear on Stewart’s Christmas show, according to a recent report in People magazine: Tom Hanks, Placido Domingo, Mel Gibson, Glenn Close, Emma Thompson, Wayne Gretzky, Clint Eastwood, Robin Williams and John F. Kennedy Jr. She ended up with Michael Jordan, Dennis Franz and Miss Piggy.
