College Hall Of Fame Picks Ex-UW Coach

Compiled From Wire Services

The College Football Hall of Fame will induct former University of Washington football coach Don James, who led the Huskies to a share of the national championship in 1991 and six Rose Bowls.

James Wallace Butts, head coach at Georgia from 1939-60, and former Wyoming, Arkansas and Tennessee coach Bowden Wyatt also were elected.

Inductees are selected by a 12-member panel of media, athletic directors and conference commissioners put together by the National Football Foundation.

James is the winningest coach in Washington history, compiling a 153-57-2 record during his 18 seasons. After taking over the program in 1974, James led the Huskies to 15 bowl games, and is one of only four coaches to win four Rose Bowls.

His 1991 team posted a perfect 12-0 record after defeating Michigan in the Rose Bowl and shared the national championship with Miami.

James abruptly resigned before the start of the 1993 season after the Pacific-10 Conference handed down stiff penalties against the school for numerous rules infractions.

James retired with an overall record of 178-95-3, which includes four years at Kent State.

Butts, who died in 1973, spent 22 seasons as head coach at Georgia, where he compiled a 140-86-9 record with four Southeastern Conference titles and eight bowl appearances.

Wyatt is the third person to be elected to the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach and a player, joining Amos Alonzo Stagg and Bobby Dodd.
