Dunham’s Clutch 3s Lift Shadle By Ferris
The smart play isn’t always the best play.
In hindsight, Nate Dunham knew that. But at the time, he never even thought about it.
Dunham drilled two clutch 3-pointers and Kerry Hipps swished two free throws with 4 seconds left to give Shadle Park a 50-46 victory over second-ranked Ferris before a frenzied, standing-room-only crowd estimated at 1,200 crammed into the 900-seat Shadle gym Tuesday night.
After three straight airballs, Dunham knocked down a 3 from the left wing with 2:38 to play to put the Highlanders up 45-43. Justin Bursch of Ferris fed Jason Weatherred inside to tie the game at the 1:25 mark and then Shadle went for the last shot.
The Saxons decided not to let the Highlanders dictate the finish and fouled Dunham with 45 seconds remaining. Dunham missed the front end of a one-and-one, but the ball rebounded long off the back iron and Jeff Meyers grabbed it. He kicked the ball back to Dunham who let a 3 fly from the top of the key.
“Actually, I was really surprised the free throw didn’t go. If I had it to do over, maybe the smart thing would be to grab it and go for the last shot,” said Dunham. “I thought that was the most open I had been all game.”
Jeremy Lucke, Bursch and Tommy Servine each missed 3’s for Ferris before Charlie Gordon was fouled going for a putback with 5 seconds left. Gordon made the first and missed the second on purpose. He missed the rim, however, giving Shadle Park the ball. On the in-bounds play, Hipps was fouled but iced the game, handing Ferris its first loss in 10 league games, 13 overall.
“That’s the most nervous I’ve ever been in my life,” Hipps said. “We practice those every day. Coach always says to shoot them like it’s the second-biggest game of your life.”
Shadle Park won its ninth straight to go to 11-4 overall and match Ferris at 9-1 in the Greater Spokane League. The Saxons had won the league opener between the schools 57-46 at Ferris.
“It was a great game,” Ferris coach Wayne Gilman said. “Both teams played hard, but I thought they played more together than we did. I told the guys they have to decide if they want to be individual stars or be a team.”
He was referring - and Shadle Park’s Darcy Weisner agreed - to the number of forced shots and ill-advised passes by Servine, Bursch and Dunham in the second half. All three seemed caught up in head-to-head matchups, trying to win the game individually.
Dunham snapped out of it with the two clutch shots.
“I expect (the ball) to go in every time,” Dunham said. “I haven’t been shooting real well but I still expect it to go in.”
Weisner said he probably would have preferred to see his team go for a final shot but he wasn’t disappointed by his point guard’s decision.
“He’s unpredictable, that’s what makes him good,” he said.
