13-Year-Old Boy Hit While Bicycling Dies

From Staff And Wire Reports

A 13-year-old Spokane boy who was hit by a car while bicycling on a highway west of Cheney died Wednesday, the Washington State Patrol said.

Cooper Jones died at 1 p.m. at Deaconess Medical Center. He had been in critical condition since the accident.

Shortly before 7 p.m. on June 24, Cooper was riding in a Baddlands Cycling Club time trial, headed west on state Highway 904. He was hit from behind by a Cadillac driven by Glena Ward, 65.

The boy flew headfirst into the car’s windshield. When Ward braked, he tumbled off the hood, landing in front of the car.

Ward told WSP troopers she didn’t see the boy before the accident.

Cooper survived the accident due to the quick action of off-duty doctors and nurses at the scene. He was rushed to the hospital, but his condition never improved.

The State Patrol is continuing to investigate the accident.
