One Dead, Several Injured In Holiday Travel Metaline Man Killed When Car Runs Off Highway In Pend Oreille

Accidents on the region’s roads and waterways left two Spokane men hospitalized, several residents injured and a Metaline man dead after the first day of the holiday week end.

Shawn M. Flanagan, 25, was killed at 11:30 p.m. Thursday when his car swerved off Highway 211 in Pend Oreille County, said the Washington State Patrol.

Flanagan was southbound when his car swerved near the Moonlight Trailer Park, partially ejecting him from the 1997 Chevrolet Camaro.

The car rolled several times before landing on its roof. Flanagan died at the scene from massive internal injuries, according to WSP reports.

Two Spokane men remained hospitalized Friday after a head-on collision on Highway 2.

Scott W. Witherow, 17, was southbound in his 1989 Chrysler LeBaron when he crossed into the northbound lane, according to the WSP. He crashed into a Ford pickup driven by Timothy Thomas, 31, the WSP said.

Witherow suffered a fractured pelvis, ruptured spleen and bruised heart.

He was in critical condition at Sacred Heart Medical Center late Friday.

Thomas was in surgery late Friday with a fractured left ankle and severe lacerations.

Dozens of accidents accompanied the Fourth of July revelry in North Idaho.

A vehicle struck two pedestrians during the morning parade in Sandpoint, police said. The victims were treated at Bonner General Hospital and released.

An early afternoon boat fire on Black Lake east of Lake Coeur d’Alene injured at least one person. The woman was still being treated at the Kootenai Medical Center emergency room late Friday. Her name was not released.

The only arrest for possession of fireworks took place Wednesday when Spokane police found a 17-year-old throwing a lighted bottle rocket from his car on Francis near Elm.

He had 46 more bottle rockets in his shirt, police said.
