Demonstration At Primate Center Leads To 2 Arrests

Associated Press

Two protesters were arrested Monday after a window broke during an animal rights demonstration at the University of Washington’s primate research center.

University Police Capt. Jon Brogelette said the man and woman were among a group of about two dozen people protesting inside and outside the Health Sciences Building, near the primate center.

Protesters said the event was part of a campaign to call attention to seven such research centers across the United States.

A protest leader, Craig Rosebraugh, 25, of Portland, said Monday’s demonstration was called after UW officials refused to schedule a public meeting to discuss the experiments done on animals.

John Coulter, executive director of UW Health Sciences, said university officials agreed to meet with the protesters, but without reporters present.

The protests began Saturday when five dozen animal-rights activists marched to the campus.

The UW primate center was opened in 1961. It is one of seven centers across the country dedicated to medical and biological research using primates.
