Gwynn’s Homers Can’t Stop Rockies

Andres Galarraga drew a bases-loaded walk from Padres stopper Trevor Hoffman with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning Friday night, and the Colorado Rockies stopped a seven-game losing streak with a 6-5 victory over San Diego.

Tony Gwynn hit two home runs in a game for the second time in his career, including a two-run shot with two outs in the ninth that tied it at 5.

Gwynn, who set a career-high with 15 homers, went 4 for 5 and raised his average to .3988.

Colorado’s Larry Walker went 1 for 4, dropping him to .3987.

Gwynn extended his hitting streak to 16 games. It was his third four-hit game of the season.

Harvey Pulliam singled with one out in the Colorado 11th and Jeff Reed walked with two outs. Hoffman (3-4) fell behind Walker, then intentionally walked him, loading the bases.

Jeremi Gonzalez continued his mastery of St. Louis and got all the help he needed from Sammy Sosa, who hit his 18th homer and drove in four runs.

Atlanta

Pinch-hitter Matt Franco’s two-run double highlighted a four-run eighth inning that carried New York to its fifth straight victory.

Franco, the top pinch-hitter in the majors this season, improved to 13 for 27 (.481) in that role.

Expos 5, Reds 2

Cincinnati

David Segui’s two-out, two-run homer put Montreal ahead in the sixth inning, and Expos relievers repeatedly pitched out of bases-loaded threats.

Expos outfielder Vladimir Guerrero sustained a hairline fracture in his left hand when he was hit by a pitch and will be sidelined for 3-4 weeks. Umpire Ed Rapuano called it a foul ball and Expos manager Felipe Alou was ejected for arguing the call.

Rookie Scott Rolen went 3 for 4 with five RBIs as Philadelphia snapped a 13-game road losing streak.

Philadelphia’s Curt Schilling (10-8) struck out 10 or more batters for the eighth time this season.

Dodgers 6, Giants 2

Los Angeles

Hideo Nomo pitched eight strong innings and Todd Zeile’s three-run homer capped a six-run fifth inning as Los Angeles won its eighth straight.

Astros 10, Pirates 0

Pittsburgh

Derek Bell homered and drove in two runs during a 3-for-4 night as the Astros shut out Pittsburgh for the second game in a row.
