Longtime Former Ewu Golf Coach Dies Of Cancer

Don Kallem, former Eastern Washington University golf coach and physical education professor, died Thursday at his home in King ston, Wash., after losing a battle with brain cancer.

Kallem, 63, retired in 1995 after 31 years at Eastern. Services tentatively have been set for Tuesday in Poulsbo.

Kallem coached the men’s team for 16 seasons through 1982 then returned to direct the men’s and women’s teams in 1993 and 1994.

His teams won six straight NAIA district championships from 1967-72 and two more in 1978 and 1979.

Kallem, who spent several years as a football assistant, coached area pros Gary Lindeblad of Indian Canyon and Steve Nelke of Hangman Valley. He was a past president of the NAIA Golf Coaches Association.

Kallem is survived by his wife, Marjory; two sons, Kris, the assistant pro at The Fairways, and Dan, of Portland, and daughters Jo Spaulding and Stephanie Hobbs of Cheney.
