Photography Contest Winners Announced

Winners of Catholic Cemeteries of Spokane’s photography contest have been announced. The competition was open to all area high school students.

The winners are: Janell Worth, first place; Aaron Anderson, second place; Gabe Johnson, third place; and Brooke Davis, Amy Barker and Gabe Johnson, all honorable mention.

The photographs are on display at Holy Cross Cemetery offices.

Four students attending Community Colleges of Spokane have received Washington Award for Vocational Excellence scholarships. The students, their fields and schools are:

Heather Perry, invasive cardiovascular technology, and Tracy Struble, health unit coordinator, both of Spokane Community College; and Teri Wiese, accounting, and Marianne Harriman, library technician, both of Spokane Falls Community College.

The scholarships are based on student leadership, community activities, work experience, instructors’ recommendations and personal essays.

Chris Kruger, a graduate of Riverside High School, and Randy Lindberg, a University High School graduate, each will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Spokane Transportation Club.

Kruger will attend Spokane Community College, and Lindberg will continue his studies at Washington State University.

Denise Osei, a multicultural specialist and counselor at Spokane Community College, was honored at the citywide “Stars: A Celebration of Heros.”

She was credited with helping improve the college’s overall enrollment of students of color through personal visits to local community centers, churches and Indian reservations.

Osei has also been instrumental in developing an effective orientation program for new students at the college.

Matthew Williams and Matt Grabowski, both graduates of Mead High School, have been initiated into the Beta Theta Pi International Fraternity by the Eastern Washington chapter.

Williams is the son of Jim and Bonnie Williams of Spokane. Grabowski is the son of Rich and Kathy Grabowski of Colbert.

Air Force 2nd Lt. Daniel Halsted, son of Ronald and Thanne Halsted of Spokane, received his silver wings upon graduating from the Air Force undergraduate pilot training program in Del Rio, Texas.

He graduated from Mead High School in 1991 and received a bachelor’s degree from the Air Force Academy in 1995.

Denise Kirkpatrick has been promoted to senior master sergeant in the Air Force. She is a nutritional medicine flight superintendent with the 81st Medical Support Squadron in Biloxi, Miss.

Kirkpatrick is the daughter of Gayle and Jeanne Hays of Spokane.

Army 2nd Lt. David Austin, son of Robert and Beverly Austin of Spokane, has completed the armor officer basic course in Radcliff, Ky.

He is a 1992 Gonzaga Prep graduate and received his bachelor of arts degree in 1996 from Princeton (N.J.) University.

Army Sgt. Russell Cook has been decorated with the Army Achievement Medal for meritorious service, acts of courage or other outstanding accomplishments.

Cook is a fighting vehicle infantryman with the 16th Cavalry at Fort Knox in Radcliff, Ky.

His parents are Michael and Dianna Cook of Spokane.

Phil Duval was named Volunteer of the Month for Big Brothers and Sisters.

Duval, 61, has been a Big Brother for two years to 11-year-old Christopher. Together they do Christopher’s homework, go fishing and hiking and have barbecues.
