Garland Alliance Marks 100th Year

Nina Culver Correspondent

The Garland Avenue Alliance Church at 2011 W. Garland is celebrating its 100th anniversary this weekend.

The church was founded in 1897 as a mission at Trent and Howard by Wisconsin native Joseph N. Tewinkel. His grandson, Joseph M. Tewinkel, will be the master of ceremonies at a special reception and presentation at the church on Saturday.

Since its small beginnings 100 years ago, the church has had five locations and 24 pastors. It’s been at its present site on the corner of Garland and Cannon since the dedication of its new building in 1964.

The centennial celebration begins Friday with a no-host dinner at the Golden Corral, 7117 N. Division, at 6:30 p.m. The festivities will continue on Saturday with a reception at the church at 2 p.m., followed by a presentation by former pastors at 3.

Special guest Rev. Richard Porter of the Seven Oak Alliance Church in Abbottsford, B.C., will speak at the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services on Sunday.
