Compiled From Wire Services

The Stanley Cup is heading to Russia next month.

The National Hockey League has approved a request from some Russian-born members of the champion Detroit Red Wings to bring the trophy to their homeland.

Though the Stanley Cup has traveled to Germany, Finland and Sweden, it’s the first time the prize is being sent to Russia.

The Dallas Stars re-signed Darryl Sydor to a one-year contract, bringing back the team’s top-scoring defenseman from last season.

The Edmonton Oilers traded forward Vladimir Vujtek to the Tampa Bay Lightning for forward Brant Myhres, a former Spokane Chief, and a conditional draft choice.

In another move, the Lightning signed free-agent defenseman Yves Racine, a power-play specialist.

The St. Louis Blues agreed to terms with goaltender Rich Parent, the former Spokane Chief, who helped lead the Detroit Vipers to the International Hockey League title last year.

The New York Rangers agreed to terms on a two-year, $900,000 contract with free-agent defenseman Jeff Finley, who played for Phoenix last season.

The Philadelphia Flyers signed Michigan Tech University defenseman Travis VanTighem to a one-year contract.

The San Jose Sharks re-signed free agent center Ron Sutter, the younger brother of new head coach Darryl Sutter.
