Olympic decathlon champion Dan O’Brien, still bothered by a nagging leg injury, has declined his wild-card invitation to next month’s World Track And Field Championships in Athens, Greece.
O’Brien had dearly wanted the Athens opportunity.
“It’s very disappointing, because I wanted to have dominated all five world championships in the ‘90s,” said O’Brien, who missed last month’s U.S. trials with a stress fracture in his right tibia. “I thought with five weeks of good, solid training, I could be ready, but I’ve been out three days a week. So I’m going to take the rest of the summer off and work on my golf game. But I’m still undefeated since 1992. So until someone beats me, I’ll continue to call myself the world’s greatest athlete.”
