Perfection Tire Upsets Autocraft In Giants Tourney Action

Regular season Spokane Valley Baseball Giants League champion Autocraft found itself in the loser’s bracket after two rounds of tournament competition.

In a game between Centennial Middle School classmates, Perfection Tire upset Autocraft 7-0 to reach the semifinals.

Centennial plays Valley Electric, a 13-2 winner over Broadway Eye Care, Monday at West Valley High for a berth in the tournament finals.

Valley Electric’s Jay Pearson hurled a two-hit, 12-strikeout game against Eye Care and went 3-for-4 offensively.

Paul Shryack and Matt Spencer each were 3-for-5 during the triumph.

In other playoff games Brett Neste led Eye Care past Banner Fuel. He pitched four no-hit innings, fanning seven and went 2-for-2 with a two-run double and scored twice.

Banner had upset County Deputy Sheriff’s on the pitching of Brandon Slocum, who scattered nine hits in five innings. Deputy Sheriff player John Cox was 3-for-4 with a triple and double, but it wasn’t enough during the one-run loss.

Midget Tournament

Midget and Pee Wee tourneys are in eighth round. For the most part, surviving teams followed form.

The lone stunner came when Olympic Sports beat Spokane Indians 16-6 with a 9-run fifth inning. Olympic was seeded 15th in the tournament, the Indians 3rd.

Top-seeded Tom’s Barber Shop beat Gibson’s Nursery 12-1 on the 11-strikeout, no-hit pitching of Russell McCathern, Chase Earling and Tyler Foster.

Earling and Kyle Taylor each drove in three runs. Ben Schmidtt, who broke his front tooth during pre-game batting practice, returned to make the final two outs of the game from center field.

Tom’s plays Dave’s Grill, a 13-2 winner over Inland Imaging. Valley Kiwanis blanked Northwest Fence 8-0 and meets Happy Hatter, a 14-3 winner over Metro Signs.

Ellingsen-Paxton beat Syncor 12-4 and plays Olympic Sports. Illustrated Air shut out Conley’s Restaurant 4-0 and plays Pavillion Park, an 11-7 winner over Spear’s Used Cars.

Pee Wee Tournament

Four strokes of the bat accounted for 10 runs as long-ball hitting Medicine Shoppe blitzed Olympic Sports 16-0 in the Pee Wee tourney.

The league unbeatens got grand slam homers from Nick Burger and Matt Hanna. Burger and Josh Morse hit solo blasts.

The team moves opposite Dr. Decounter, an 18-9 winner over Trent. They’re on the same side of the bracket with Dave’s Grill, which beat Pizza Hut 8-7, and CXT, which beat Norma’s 10-3.

On the other side are Bert Shields Auto, 15-0 winner over South Pines 2, Jim Psomas DDS, which beat Henderson Roofing 11-3, Homestead Construction, 8-0 winner over Spear’s Used Cars, and Pavillion Park, 15-0 winner over Bond Chiropractic.

All-Comers track at U-Hi

University High School will be the site of an all-comers track meet on Tuesday.

The meet, open to all track athletes, begins at 6 p.m. and costs $1 for unlimited events.

Soccer team wins titles

The Spokane Valley Express Hurricanes, a U-14 girls soccer team, has won two tournaments this summer.

In late June the team won the Baker Blast in Bellingham and last weekend won the Walla Walla Onion Cup.

A player short, the Hurricanes lost to Tricities of Vancouver, British Columbia, 3-2 in their Baker Blast opener. They then beat FC Kitsap 4-1, Bellingham 4-9, Lake Stevens 2-0, and Tricities 2-0 for the title.

In Walla Walla, the team shut out the Express Eliminators 7-0, Walla Walla High Voltage 1-0 and Walla Walla Juventus 4-0 for the championship.

Players are Andrea Adamson, Kelly Altmaier, Chris Bartlett, Sonia Brostrom, Sam DeLeo, Brandi Duran, Sasha Edmunds, Melanie Frostad, Andrea Gutierrez, Lisa Hall, April Kawamoto, Mary McLachlan, Taunya Pankey, Jessica Prewitt, Stephanie Ruby, Paula Soash, Deverie Valdez, Beth Wert and Shauna White.

Coaches are Charles Duran and James Prewitt.

Fund-raiser for camp

The West Valley High girls basketball team is conducting a fund-raising night at Tony Roma’s Restaurant, 7640 N. Division, July 23 from 4-8 p.m.

Team members will bus tables and portions of proceeds will help defray cost to a team camp in Moscow, Idaho.

Hanging Tree tourney

Hangman Valley Ladies Golf Club member golfer Carol Wieber won this year’s annual Hanging Tree Tournament.

Taking the best two net scores of the three-day outing, Wieber finished with a 137 total.

A flight winner was Billie Etter at 140, followed three strokes back by Gloria Cash and Marlene Thies.

Fran Nord won B flight at 146, followed by Donna Ogilvie and Dorothy Tormino.

C flight winner was Marie Nelson, over Sue Henley and Marge Hardin.

Winning D flight was Delores Bridwell at 153, over Gloria Hemminger and Pat Coon.

Play of the day was best nine and half handicap. Cash won A flight with 34, Nord won B with 35-1/2, Wieber won C with 35 and Kathy Thiessen won D with 37.

Geiger paces Painted Hills

During medal play last week among Painted Hills Ladies Club golfers, Caroline Geiger’s low gross 43 led the way.

She topped A flight where Jackie Booth had a net 36.

In B flight, Lolly Neff shot 52 and Carla Stendin netted 35. In C flight, Elaine Lukes shot 56 and Nancy Hansen netted 36.

D flight winners were Renae Younker with 64 gross and Sue Lewis with 33 net. Geri Osterud had a no-handicap score of 53.

Jacobs leads Valley View

During medal play last week for Valley View Ladies Club, Joyce Jacobs led the way with a 46, three strokes better than Carol Maycock.

Maycock shared net honors with Carol Dahl at 28.

B flight was a tie between Deanna Hauser and Cathy Mileson with low gross 50s, and Donna Festersen and Charlotte Green with net 27s.

C flight went to Emma Long with 59 and Marilyn McMahan with net 25.

Bohannan tops 9-Hole outing

During last week’s outing for Liberty Lake Ladies 9-Holers Club, Ellan Bohannan led the way with a low gross 48.

In B flight, Jacobs shot 62 and Shirley Schoenberger had a net 40. In C flight Sybill Sturgill shot 62 and Jean Kelly netted 41.
