Compiled From Wire Services

Top-seeded Michael Chang, ranked second in the world, cruised to a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) semifinal victory over 11th-seeded Brett Steven of New Zealand in the Legg Mason Classic in Washington, D.C.

Chang, the defending champion, will face Petr Korda of the Czech Republic, a 6-2, 6-3 winner over unseeded David Wheaton.

In Mahwah, N.J., Monica Seles retired from a semifinal match against Chanda Rubin in the A&P Tennis Classic because of a bad back.

Seles, the top seed and the third-ranked player in the world, won the first set 6-3 and the players were on serve with Rubin leading 3-2 when Seles decided she couldn’t continue in the exhibition event.

Rubin, the fourth seed and the 1995 winner, will face second-seeded Anna Kournikova in today’s final. The 16-year-old Russian beat fifth-seeded Maggie Maleeva 6-4, 6-1 in the second semifinal.
