‘Family Matters’ To Update Roles

New York Daily News

“Family Matters” will get more than a new network when it moves from ABC to CBS this fall.

There’ll be some changes in some of the characters and in the look of the show.

Most prominently, nosy neighbor Steve Urkel, played by Jaleel White, will be brought up to date.

“I think we need to just put Steve in some more mature situations,” White told TV writers here.

“Ditch the high school sweaters they used to wear in ‘Happy Days.”’

The character of Carl Winslow (Reginald VelJohnson) is also undergoing a slight change. He’ll become a police captain - he’s been a patrolman - which will put him into another work environment.

White, 20, has been playing Urkel since the show launched on ABC eight seasons ago. Fans shouldn’t fret over the alterations, he said: “He’s the same person,” White stressed.

“He’s kindhearted. He’s a goober. He’s going to break everything.”
