Whitworth College Honors Faculty, Staff, Administrators

Whitworth College faculty, administrators and staff members were honored for their service to the college at its recent Employee Awards Banquet:

Arlin Migliazzo, history professor, received the Teaching Excellence Award.

Julia Stronks, assistant professor of political studies, received the Dean’s Award for Junior Faculty Achievement.

Gerald Paschall, custodian, received the Outstanding Physical Plant Service Award.

Cheryl Vawter, acting director of continuing studies, received the Outstanding ProfessionalTechnical Service Award.

Dayna Coleman, assistant dean of students and director of the campus center and student activities, received the Outstanding Administrator Service Award.

Mary Ann Barrong, certification specialist in the School of Education, received the Outstanding Support Staff Service Award.

Raja Tanas, professor of sociology, received the Outstanding Faculty Service Award.

Beverly Jones, daughter of Walter and Marjorie Jones of Spokane, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Smith College in Northampton, Mass.

She graduated magna cum laude in government and received the Valeria Dean Burgess Stevens prize for excellent work in women’s studies.

Jones is a 1993 graduate of St. George’s School.

A team from St. George’s High School ranked seventh nationally among students who participated in the JETS exam. The students also placed first statewide in the varsity division for schools with four to 40 graduating seniors. The competition was sponsored locally by Gonzaga University’s Department of Engineering.

Other placements in the GU exam included:

Junior Varsity Division 7 (251-499 graduating seniors): first place, Lewis and Clark A-Team; second place, University High; and third place, LC B-Team.

Varsity Division 7: first place, LC A-Team; second place, University High; third place, North Central B-Team; fourth place, NC A-Team; and fifth place, LC B-Team.

Each No. 1 team also placed first in the state and advanced to national ranking.

Melissa Rees, a Mead High School student, has been accepted as an international exchange student with Youth for Understanding International Exchange. She will live with a family in Germany for the fall semester.

Jason Workman, a 1988 graduate of North Central High School and a 1993 graduate of Washington State University, received a Master of Science degree in the physician’s assistant program at Rutgers University in Newark, N.J.

Workman is the son of Kathy Landry.

Velva Myers and Teeomm Williams, both of Spokane, each received Gonzaga University’s Ignatius of Loyola Magis Medal Award for leadership, service and academics upon graduation with honors from GU this spring.
