Resignation Opens Spot On Cheney School Board

Janice Podsada Staff writer

After 12 years of service, Niel Zimmerman has resigned from the Cheney School Board.

Superintendent Phil Snowden accepted Zimmerman’s letter of resignation at the regular school board meeting July 9.

Zimmerman, a professor of government at Eastern Washington University, served three years as school board president. His term would have expired in November.

“We appreciate Niel’s commitment to the kids in the school district,” said Dale Lamphere, school board president. “He’s got a leadership style that’s real infectious. We certainly will miss that style.”

Snowden said Cheney’s five-member board is seeking someone not only willing to fill in for Zimmerman during the interim but who is willing to run in the November election.

“We’re hoping to have the new board member on board in September,” said Sharon Throop, secretary to the superintendent.

An applicant must be a registered voter and reside in Director District 1, which includes the southwest part of the city of Cheney, including the EWU campus, Throop said.

The application must be submitted by Aug. 11.

Filing dates for the four-year term are July 28-Aug. 1.
