Jazzy John Wins Potty Award

Knight-Ridder

Jeff MacKellar hastily stopped at a Midland, Mich., gas station with a single purpose in mind - and it wasn’t buying gas.

But the decor caused him to do a double take.

Above the door in the coed bathroom inside the station’s minimarket are nautical gauges for humidity, air pressure and temperature.

Across the doorway is a magazine rack stuffed with a USA Today newspaper. And atop the toilet, a pot of potpourri keeps the room smelling like bayberries.

The jazzy john was one of three winners in Total Petroleum’s first Golden Throne competition - a nationwide contest to see which Total station could most closely create a bathroom with the comforts of home.

Thursday, Total marketing executives awarded manager Alynda Cobb a $5,000 grand prize along with a 2-foot-tall golden toilet trophy, which Cobb plans to suspend on the bathroom wall.
