Cooper Breaks Record Yet Again With 44 Points

Cynthia Cooper scored 44 points, setting a WNBA scoring record for the third time in as many games, as the Houston Comets defeated the visiting Sacramento Monarchs 86-76 Friday night.

Cooper set the record of 30 a week ago at Sacramento and increased it to 32 against Phoenix four days later.

The Houston guard entered the game as the league’s leading scorer with a 19.3 average. She hit 7 of 9 3-pointers and converted 14 of 21 shots overall. Latasha Byears had 17 points and 17 rebounds for the Monarchs.

Tamecka Dixon hit a 17-foot jumper with 18 seconds remaining in overtime to lift Los Angeles. The Sparks (6-10) played the overtime without Lisa Leslie, who had 17 points and eight rebounds before fouling out with a minute left in regulation.
