Spokane Blue Is Anything But With Another Championship

Champions were determined during last week’s Spokane Valley Girls League double-elimination softball tournaments.

Spokane Blue completed an unbeaten 16-Under league season for its third championship in four years and a 56-4 record during that time.

The team beat Spokane County Deputy Sheriff’s Association for the title.

In the 14-U National League, Valley Eagles completed a perfect 4-0 run through the tournament with a title victory over Dr. Benage.

Champion of the American Division was Jewelry Design which came out of the loser’s bracket to defeat BMC West and Leo’s Photography twice for the title.

Action Medical went undefeated in the 12-Under National event.

Perfection Tire won five of six games, including twice over Les Schwab Tire for the American Division crown.

During 10-Under tournament play Valley Kiwanis lost its very first game, then won five in a row to beat Ramax Printing for the American Division championship.

Northwest Kenpo Karate was forced to a second game in the National Division before overcoming Awardmasters for the National Division championship.

State berth is goal

The Valley Cannons meet the regular season champion Spokane Blue Devils today in the second game of a best-of-three American Legion AAA baseball playoff.

The series will determine Spokane’s entrant in the Washington State Senior Babe Ruth baseball tournament beginning Aug. 2.

The game will be at 4 p.m. at Shadle Park’s Al K. Jackson field. A third game, if necessary, will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at Gonzaga University.

The Cannons won a pair of one-run games to oust the Bandits in the first round of Spokane league play. They won initially on Wednesday, lost in the first game of a Thursday twin bill, but won the second game.

The Cannons include nine players from Central Valley High, five from WV and two from EV.

Finalists play for baseball titles

Finalists do battle today on the West Valley High School varsity field for their respective Spokane Valley Baseball championships.

Broadway Eye Care beat Perfection Tire 4-1 and plays Valley Electric at 3 p.m. for the Giants title.

The team broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning when Eric McMurtrey singled in a run, Michael Koentopp hit a two-run double and Brett Neste scored him with another double.

Koentopp pitched six innings of no-hit, no-run ball and got out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout.

Earlier, Broadway had rallied from an 11-1 deficit to beat Jim Frazier Trophy 13-11 and held off Autocraft 8-7 after leading 7-3 in a rain-delayed six-inning game.

Valley Electric was first to the Giant finals with its two-day 10-inning 4-3 win over Perfection Tire.

Perfection Tire had scored twice in the seventh to force extra innings.

When the teams reconvened the next night, Valley Electric’s Andrew Bower drove in Paul Shryack with the winning run. Shryack scored three of the team’s four runs.

Valley Electric is 13-2 overall and has beaten Broadway twice this year. Broadway Eye Care has a 13-3 record.

Midget League

Top-seeded Tom’s Barber Shop won for the 14th straight time to reach the Midget tourney finals.

The team blanked Dave’s Grill 9-0 and beat Happy Hatter 7-2, Kyle Taylor going 3-for-3 and Justin Bright was 2-for-3.

Tom’s, 14-1, plays Illustrated Air, 11-4, for the title at noon.

Illustrated Air won 3-2 and 8-2 games, the latter over upstart Olympic Sports. Olympic was 15th seeded tournament team but won three straight playoff games to make the semifinals.

Pee Wee League

Top-two seeds play in the 9:30 a.m. Pee Wee tourney title game.

Medicine Shoppe, unbeaten in 14 games, faces Bert Shields Auto, winners of 14 out of 15 games.

Medicine Shoppe nudged CXT 5-4 after the latter completed a suspended game with a 14-13 victory over Dave’s Grill.

Bert Shields pitchers J.D. Edlund and Bret Riggin pitched a perfect game during a 2-0 win over Pavillion Park. Edlund’s two-run single in the fourth inning produced the runs.

Bert Shields has allowed three hits and one run in three playoff wins.

Valley View Ladies Golf

During medal play last week for Valley View Ladies Club golfers, Joyce Jacobs turned in low score.

She shot 49 in A flight, while Cleo Workland had 55 in B. Marilyn McMahon and Shirley James tied at 64 in C flight.

Net winners were Sue Matsui in A flight and Mary Ann Warren in B with 30s. Monica Ryan led C golfers with 34.

Painted Hills Ladies Golf

Painted Hills Ladies Golf Club was led by another strong effort from Danice Deckard.

Deckard shot 40 to lead all golfers and win A flight honors last week.

Pam Venter had 49 in C flight, Susan Crosby shot 53 in C and Cindee Corrick had 57 in D. No-handicap winner was Judy Albert with 68.

A flight net winner was Carol McVicker with a 29. She birdied the sixth hole. In B flight, Ronda Trotter shot 34.

C flight winner was Patty Tomson with 31 and D winner was Irene Strong with 35.

Linda Garves birdied and Elaine Lukes had a chip-in, both on the seventh hole.

Liberty Lake 9-Hole Golf

Thursday was medal play for Liberty Lake Ladies 9-Hole Golf Club members.

Elaine Tai led A flight with a low gros 54, Nancy Lampe led B with 57, Min Gutterud led C with 61 and Deanna Hauser led D.

Net winners were Joan Leighton in A flight with 39, Marty Liebelt in B with 38, Helen Inman in C with 35 and Elberta Walker in D with 38.
