Lindeblad Catches Fire With 66 In Pro-Junior At Meadowwood

Indian Canyon pro Gary Lindeblad, sizzling on the front side, put together a 6-under-par 66 Monday to lead the Athletic Round Pro-Junior golf tournament at MeadowWood.

Lindeblad had nines of 31-35.

Dave Zimmerman of Spokane Country Club and Mark Rohde of Liberty Lake shared second among the pros with 67s. Leading junior was Dan Potter of Avondale with a 3-under 69. Lani Elston of Qualchan was the low girl, shooting an 82.

Boys division leaders: 8-11-Matt Schiller, Painted Hills, and Joel Dahmen, Clarkston, 87s. 12-14-David Fern, Hangman Valley, 73.

David Christenson of Indian Canyon shares second after the first round of the ZEVO Pacific Northwest Section Assistants Championship at Port Orchard, Wash.

Christenson and Joe Carranza of Puetz Driving Range matched 3-under-par 69s to trail leader Todd Erwin of Southcenter Golf by two shots.

Final round is today. The winner will represent the section in the PGA National Assistants Championship in November.

Scott Shagool of Manito Golf and Country Club shares 12th with a 2-over 74 to lead six other area assistants are in the field.

EWU plans golf kickoff

Entries are being accepted for the 11th annual Excell Foods Eagle Kickoff Golf Classic Aug. 7 at MeadowWood Golf Course.

Hosted by Eastern Washington University, recent tournaments have featured capacity crowds of as many as 180 golfers. Proceeds benefit the Eagle Athletic Association to fund athletic scholarships.

Teams will compete for more than $4,000 in prizes in the best-ball scramble. A special handicap will be established for each team, giving every squad a chance at placing high regardless of ability.

The tournament begins at noon. Cost is $125 per person, which includes green fees, golf cart, lunch, dinner, Eagle football tickets and two admissions on the EAA’s annual Lake Coeur d’Alene Cruise, among other things.

The cruise is Aug. 6. Cost is $10 for those who don’t play in the kickoff classic.

Indians, Seafirst team up for kids

Youngsters ages 8-12 can participate in the free Seafirst Jammin’ Baseball Camp on Thursday at Seafirst Stadium.

A morning session runs 9-11:30, and an afternoon session from 12:30-3. Players and coaches from the Spokane Indians will conduct the clinic.

Besides instruction in baseball skills, a special motivation session also will be held.

EWU player transfers

Shana Ray, No. 2 scorer on the Eastern Washington women’s basketball team last winter, has transfered to Seattle Pacific, the Falcons announced.

Ray, a 5-foot-9 junior from Lynnwood, Wash., started 15 games for the Eagles and averaged 11.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.2 steals per game. She had a career-high 29 points in the 1996-97 season opener, but missed eight games in January with an injury.
