White Sox Rally; Belle’s Streak Ends

Rookie Mike Cameron’s two-run double highlighted Chicago’s three-run ninth inning Monday night that sent the White Sox to an 8-5 victory over the Brewers at Milwaukee.

The White Sox trailed 3-2 in the eighth inning when Dave Martinez hit a three-run homer. Milwaukee tied it in the bottom of the inning before Chicago came back again in the ninth to avoid being swept in the four-game series.

Chicago’s Albert Belle went 0 for 3 with two walks, ending his career-high hitting streak at 27 games. It was also the longest streak in the majors this season.

With the score tied 5-5 in the ninth, Frank Thomas singled with one out off Doug Jones (3-2). Belle flied out, then Lyle Mouton followed with a single and Cameron slapped an 0-2 pitch into the right-field corner to make it 7-5. Ozzie Guillen added an RBI single in the inning.

Tigers 8, Athletics 7

Oakland, Calif.

Bob Hamelin homered and drove in three runs and rookie Deivi Cruz hit his first major league homer for Detroit.

Mark McGwire hit his 21st homer of the season and the 350th of his career for Oakland.

Yankees 5, Red Sox 2

Boston

Paul O’Neill went 3 for 4 and drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, and David Wells pitched seven solid innings for New York against Boston.

Former Washington State pitcher Aaron Sele (6-4) took the loss after allowing three runs and nine hits in 6 innings.

Sele was trying to win his third consecutive start for the first time since 1994.

Rangers 8, Twins 0

Arlington, Texas

Darren Oliver pitched eight strong innings and Ivan Rodriguez went 3 for 5 with a home run to lead Texas over Minnesota.

Domingo Cedeno went 3 for 4 and Will Clark went 3 for 5 as Texas had a season-high 18 hits.

Cleveland’s game at Baltimore was rained out and could be made up Sept. 10 or by scheduling doubleheaders Sept. 15-16.

Clearing the bases

Roger Clemens of the Blue Jays was selected pitcher of the month for May and White Sox first baseman Frank Thomas was honored as player of the month. Clemens, 10-0 this season, was 6-0 in May with an earned run average of 1.96. Thomas batted .430 and drove in 29 runs. … Yankees prospect Hideki Irabu threw 45 pitches in a simulated game. He could make his U.S. debut Friday in a Florida State League game in Tampa, Fla. … Angels right-hander Mark Gubicza will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his pitching shoulder early this week and is expected to be out at least two more months.
