Neagle Puts Hush On Rockies’ Bats

Denny Neagle raised his record to 9-1 and Chipper Jones drove in four runs as the Atlanta Braves defeated the Colorado Rockies 8-3 Tuesday in Denver.

Neagle, taming the top hitting team in the majors with a baffling variety of off-speed pitches, limited the Rockies to three singles through five innings. Neagle went seven innings, allowing five hits and three runs with one walk and four strikeouts.

Jones had two hits, including his sixth home run of the season, a 460-foot solo homer in the ninth.

Mets 10, Cubs 6

Chicago

John Olerud, Manny Alexander, Edgardo Alfonzo and Carlos Baerga homered for New York.

Olerud and Alexander homered off Kevin Foster (7-4), who’d won his four previous decisions.

Reds 8, Pirates 5

Cincinnati

Pittsburgh reliever Rich Loiselle’s error - Pittsburgh’s first in 47 innings - let in the two go-ahead runs in the eighth inning.

The Pirates led 5-0 after sending 10 batters to the plate in the second inning, but struggling starter Jason Schmidt and the bullpen failed to hold on.

Trailing 5-4, the Reds sent up nine batters for four runs in the eighth.

With the bases loaded, Barry Larkin hit a grounder to the right side. First baseman Mark Johnson got to the ball, but his throw got by Loiselle covering first base for a two-run error.

Expos 8, Phillies 5

Montreal

Mike Lansing’s two-run single capped a four-run eighth as Montreal won its fifth straight.

Astros 6, Dodgers 3

Los Angeles

Craig Biggio’s two-out, three-run double in the eighth inning triggered a four-run rally that lifted Houston to the win.

Biggio hit the first pitch from Antonio Osuna (1-2) off the left-center field fence to drive in Ricky Gutierrez, Ray Montgomery and Bill Spiers, snapping a 2-2 tie.

Thomas Howard followed with an RBI single to score Biggio and complete the rally.

Padres 6, Cards 5, (12)

San Diego

Tony Gwynn’s third double of the game drove in the tying runs in the ninth, and Chris Gomez singled in the winning run in the 12th inning as San Diego beat St. Louis.

With one out in the 12th, Rigo Beltran (0-1) walked Wally Joyner. Quilvio Veras followed with a single to center that was bobbled by Ray Lankford, allowing both runners to advance. Gomez followed with a single to center to score Joyner.

Clearing the bases

San Diego placed utility infielder Craig Shipley on the 15-day disabled list for the second time this season, this time with a hip injury. … Dodgers catcher Mike Piazza leads all National League players in fan balloting for the starting lineup in this year’s All-Star Game.
