Local Players Lead All-Star Teams To Wins

Ryan Monroe of Riverside High School hit five 3-pointers and scored 20 points at Yakima as the State downed the City 102-97 in the Washington Coaches Association Class AA All-Star basketball game Thursday night.

City’s Ben Addink of White River had 16 points and 12 rebounds to earn game MVP honors.

In the Class B game, Travis Greenwalt of Liberty High was named most valuable player after scoring 18 points to lead the East to a 100-61 victory over the West.

The 6-foot-8 Greenwalt also pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds.

Jason Robbins of Franklin scored 21 points and collected nine rebounds in leading the State team over the City 93-68 in the AAA game. The 6-6 forward was named the game’s MVP.

In the class A game, Connell’s Lance Marquardt scored 24 points as the East beat the West 102-85.

Marquardt added 10 rebounds to earn the MVP award.

Boxing

Joe Roberts of Spokane’s Lilac City Boxing Club took a 3-2 decision over Gerareo Pineda of Oakland, Calif., to advance to Saturday’s 119-pound final of the National Junior Olympic Boxing Championships at Marquette, Mich.

Roberts will fight Steven Luevano of LaPuente, Calif.

Two other Spokane boxers lost semifinal matches in the tournament for 15- and 16-year-olds.

At 125 pounds, Mahlon Kerwick of Lilac City lost a 5-0 decision to Schamir Reyes of Brooklyn, N.Y. At 132, Dewey Welliver of the Spokane Eagles Boxing Club lost 5-0 to Mario Ramos of Phoenix.

Baseball

Tim Snell scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on an overthrow at third on an attempted steal to give the Blue Devils of Spokane a 6-5 win over Belmont, Calif., at the Cranston Tournament in Coeur d’Alene.

Eric Bell had a pair of hits, including a solo homer in the fourth inning, for the Blue Devils.

In the second game, Chris Potter pitched a complete game and added three hits to spark the Lumbermen of Coeur d’Alene to an 8-2 win over the Blue Devils.
