Tanya Klumb Earns Top Girl Scouting Award

Girl Scout Troop 445 member Tanya Klumb has earned the Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. She is a senior at University High School and a member of the National Honor Society. Tanya is the daughter of Gerry and Pat Klumb of Spokane.

The annual Honors Convocation at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa., recently honored Jacob Schmidt of Colbert.

A graduating senior, he received the GTE College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-American Award for exceptional academic and athletic achievement.

He also received the Eastern College Athletic Conference Merit Award, which is awarded to outstanding senior athletes who have achieved high athletic and academic standards. He was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa, a fellowship of scholars.

Schmidt is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Errol Schmidt and a graduate of Mead High School.

Patrick Luce of Lewis and Clark High School, placed second at the SAFECO Driving Smart Challenge. He demonstrated outstanding motor vehicle knowledge and operation. He won a $1,000 scholarship from SAFECO. Michael Hawley of Ferris High School and Brad Stark of Creston (Wash.) High School, tied for third place. Each will receive a $500 scholarship.

Otis Orchards: Matthew Bliss, secondary physical education.

Royal City, Wash.: Joshua Lawrence, business administration.

Spokane: Colin DeWitt, computer science; Bonnie Groth, religion; Brandon Hardenbrook, psychology; Kristin Hollingbery, physical education; Susan La Grandeur, physical education; Jeremie Lipton, philosophy; Amy Luinstra, communication and global studies; Erika Olson, biology; Rebecca Snowdon, secondary social studies and special education K-12; and Heidi Triesch, legal studies.

Sue Lukacs and Nikki Kettles, registered dietitians at Deaconess Medical Center, won statewide awards at the annual Washington State Dietetic Association meeting. Lukacs was named Outstanding Dietitian, and Kettles received the award for Young Registered Dietitian.

Tim Nikstad, a member of the Deaconess Medical Center pharmacy staff, has earned the designation of board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist from the American Pharmaceutical Association Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties.

Gary McLain of Ben Bridge Jeweler in Spokane has completed a course in diamond grading with the Santa Monica, Calif.-based Gemological Institute of America and has been awarded the institute’s prestigious diamond grading certificate.
