Reds’ Speedy Kelly Flexes His Muscles

Associated Press

Mike Kelly, who came in as a pinch-runner in the ninth inning, hit a two-out home run in the 11th Wednesday to lift visiting Cincinnati to a 2-1 win over Montreal, the Reds’ second consecutive extra-inning win over the Expos.

Kelly was inserted after Willie Greene hit a leadoff single in the ninth. Kelly hit his second homer, a line drive that cleared the left-field wall, off reliever Anthony Telford (2-1).

Dodgers 2, Colorado 0 Los Angeles

Ismael Valdes allowed four hits in 8-1/3 innings and retired 19 of the first 20 batters as Los Angeles beat Colorado.

Chipper Jones homered twice, including his first grand slam in the majors, and Atlanta battered Bobby Jones (12-4) for 10 runs in 4-1/3 innings in the worst start of his career.

Gary Gaetti hit a two-run homer with one out in the ninth to give St. Louis a win over Chicago.

Giants 14, Padres 7 San Francisco

J.T. Snow matched a career high with four RBIs, and Barry Bonds scored four times as San Francisco beat San Diego.

Astros 5, Pirates 1 Houston

Derek Bell’s homer broke an eighth-inning tie and Darryl Kile (9-3) pitched a six-hitter as Houston beat Pittsburgh to avoid a sweep in the three-game series.

Marlins 7, Phillies 5 Philadelphia

Marlins sale possible

Marlins owner H. Wayne Huizenga is putting the team up for sale, ESPN reported, though a spokesman for the owner said no such decision had been made.

Huizenga said last week he was disappointed with attendance after spending $175 million to upgrade the Marlins this season.

Attendance has risen 30 percent this year, but Huizenga hoped for more.

League clips Harris

Philadelphia right-hander Reggie Harris was suspended for five games and fined $1,000 for comments he made after hitting Atlanta’s Andruw Jones with a pitch Sunday.

Harris, who was thrown out of the game, admitted he hit Jones because the Braves’ Greg Maddux hit Philadelphia’s Scott Rolen the inning before. “An eye for an eye,” Harris said.

Clearing the bases

Montreal is 14-4 against teams from the N.L.

Central. … The Padres, who lost two of three to the Giants, are 0-6-3 in their last nine series. … Aside from Curt Schilling (9-6), the rest of Philadelphia’s starters are a combined 10-31.
