Dollar Rallies On U.S. Economic Strength
The dollar rebounded from early weakness to end mostly higher Monday, helped by more signs of strength in the U.S. economy and fear that Germany would report another postwar jobless record later this week.
Further underpinning the dollar were comments by a senior Bundesbank official supporting the dollar’s recent rise.
“I think the relative difference in the economies between the United States and Germany is what helped the dollar,” said Bob Near, of the Bank of New York. “It tended to remind the market of the fundamentals.”
