Highlander Boys Bowlers Win State Title; Shadle Girls Second

Shadle Park, led by Cory Hultquist, won the boys division in the 34th State High School Varsity Bowling Championships last weekend in Kent.

And the Highlanders girls, behind Beth Trudeau, were second to Stadium of Tacoma.

Both Hultquist and Trudeau earned first-team AllState honors.

Hultquist averaged 207, tying for second in the tournament, as the Shadle boys averaged 909 and posted a 7-1 record to capture first place. Omak was second.

Rogers, the only other Spokane school in the tournament, placed seventh.

Trudeau averaged 191, third by two pins behind the leader, as Shadle’s girls had the best average, 857, in the eight-game competition. But the Highlanders’ 5-2 record was second to Stadium’s 6-2.

Academic awards

Six students with perfect grade-point averages (4.0) head the list of Frontier League athletes who earned Pepsi Scholar-Athlete awards for the 1996-97 school year.

Clarkston-Heather Heytvelt, 3.9; Adam Johnson, 3.5.

Riverside-Tiffany McMurphy, 3.9; Ryan Monroe, 3.9.

Pullman-Leah Hannan, 3.9; Andrew O’Fallon, 4.0.

Colville-Kara McConnell, 4.0; Brandon True, 4.0.

Baseball

Single-game tickets for all 1997 Seattle Mariners home games go on sale today at 10 a.m. There’s a four-ticket limit only for opening night, April 1.

Tickets are available through Ticketmaster outlets - (206) 622-HITS, some Payless Drug Store outlets in Spokane or on the Internet at www.ticketmaster.com Prices range from $5 to $22. Children 14 and under receive a $2 discount in some sections.

Basketball

Ryan Smallfoot, 11, a student at Chester Elementary School, finished third in his age division at the Elks National Hoop Shoot Regional last weekend in Portland.

Smallfoot, the only Inland Empire qualifier with a top-three finish, made 17 of 25 free throws.

Bowling

Jeremy Allen defeated top qualifier Joe Cahalan 248-235 to win the Feb. 23 Junior Bowlers Tour stop at Sunset Lanes.

No. 5 qualifier Brett Rayners won two matches to finish third, followed by Ricky Brown and Ron Bowman.

Brown’s 280 was high game. Amanda Bass was high for the girls at 217.

Next JBT will be April 13 at Valley Bowl, but the Alycia Stevens Memorial three-person Swiss is March 23 at Colonial. Info: (509) 226-3776.

College scene

Joe Deutsch, a Yakima Valley sophomore from Medical Lake, was a second-team pick in the Eastern Division when the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges named its all-star teams.

Doug Clark, a freshman pitcher at Northwest Missouri State from Cheney, had a rough debut. In his first college game, he gave up five hits, a walk and two earned runs in 2 innings for a 7.71 ERA.

Ericka Harrison of Spokane (Central Valley) has the third-best balance beam score on the Southeast Missouri State gymnastics team, 9.85.

Racquetball

Erin Brannigan of Sandpoint won boys singles and was second in doubles to earn the Bulldogs a team silver medal at the 10th U.S. National High School Racquetball Championships last weekend in St. Louis.

Brannigan, who stuck with a lob-serve plan despite falling behind regularly in his singles matches, defeated Ryan Staten of Dodge City, Kan., a member of the U.S. Junior Team, 15-12, 15-14 in the finals.

Brannigan teamed with freshman Ryan Burke, a C player with little experience, for second in doubles. Sandpoint’s two-man team compiled 132 points, second to the 144 for Beaverton, Ore., which had 17 players.

Brannigan earned a tryout with the U.S. National Junior Team in August and will play in the U.S. Junior Nationals in June.

Skiing

Brian Backman, a ninth-grader at Northwood Junior High, had the best finish of the nine Spokane area skiers at the Junior Olympic Western Regional J2 Championships on Friday in Alaska.

Backman, 15, who skies for the Spokane Ski Racing Association and is in his first year at J2, was 13th in the downhill. He started 41st among 101 racers, who faced extremely tough, snowy and foggy conditions.

Soccer

One of the largest events of its kind in the country, the Community Colleges of Spokane five-a-side soccer tournament, will have its 12th renewal at Spokane Falls.

More than 300 teams - and 2,700 youth and adult players - from throughout the Northwest and British Columbia are expected next weekend and March 22-23. Games will be played on 12 small-sized fields with 24-minute time limits.

Boys and girls recreational and 12U developmental teams and men, women and coed teams will play this weekend with youth select teams the following weekend.
