Idaho Migrant Council Gets Federal Grant

Associated Press

The Idaho Migrant Council has been awarded a $100,000 federal grant to combat domestic violence and child abuse in rural areas.

The U.S. Department of Justice said on Friday that the Migrant Council is among 26 groups in 22 states receiving more than $5.6 million under the Violence Against Women Act, passed as part of the 1994 Crime Bill.

The grants ranging from $22,000 to $534,000 were awarded as part of a national competition.

Recipients will use the money to develop educational campaigns to raise public awareness about domestic violence and child abuse and provide counseling, advocacy and safe transportation to shelter for victims.

Money granted to the Idaho Migrant Council will finance a collaborative effort with the Canyon County prosecutor’s Victim-Witness Program and the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare’s Division of Family and Children’s Services.
