Inmate Litter Crew Finds Bomb In Ditch

From Staff And Wire Reports

An inmate litter crew found a homemade bomb in a ditch on the Peone Prairie northeast of Spokane on Tuesday, sheriff’s deputies said.

The county’s bomb disposal unit destroyed the device about midday.

A crew from the Geiger Corrections Center discovered the bomb about 10:15 a.m. near the intersection of Bruce and Peone roads, said Deputy Dave Reagan, sheriff’s spokesman.

Crew members told a corrections officer about their find, and he called for help.

The bomb squad used a robot to destroy the device, Reagan said. “It made a pretty good blast,” he said.

No one was hurt.

The bomb was made of what appeared to be a toilet paper roll filled with an explosive material, Reagan said. There was a fuse sticking out of the device, he added.

Deputies aren’t sure where the bomb came from, Reagan said. There are few houses in the area where the device was found. , DataTimes MEMO: Cut in Spokane edition
