Hess Shuts Down Portland As Gu Splits In Tournament

Nick Hess (1-0) scattered four hits over five innings as Gonzaga University beat the University of Portland 8-3 to open its day at the Guardian Heating and Air Conditioning tournament at Lewiston.

The host LC State Warriors (18-5-1) beat GU (11-11-1) in a later game 9-5 on Jose Rio-Berger’s grand slam in the bottom of the eighth.

Against Portland (8-13-1), GU built a 7-0 lead behind Donnie Murrell’s two-run double in the second inning and Dominic Prince’s two-run single in the third. Murrell had a two-run homer in the fifth and a two-run single in the seventh against LCSC.

Today, Gonzaga plays LC State for the championship at 2 p.m.

Junior Jason Tracy, a right-hander from Colville, pitched a five-hitter and struck out five as visiting Whitworth beat Pacific Lutheran University 6-1 in a Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges game at Tacoma.

Tracy (2-3) retired the side in order four times. He allowed David Quiggle’s RBI single in the third inning, then never let another runner past first base after the fourth.

Miguel Saldin of the Pirates (5-12, 4-1) finished 3 for 4, with two runs scored and a stolen base. Tim Bishop added a two-out, two-run single during the four-run fifth. The Lutes are 3-6, 1-2.
