Two Held In Car Theft; Man Jailed After Chase

From Staff Reports

An early morning chase landed a 20-year-old Spokane Valley man in jail for attempting to elude police.

And an investigation resulted in a pair of teenagers being taken to juvenile detention for stealing a car.

A sheriff’s deputy went to the 17000 block of East Sprague at midnight Monday to investigate the reported theft of a 1997 Toyota RAV 4.

While in the area, the deputy spotted what was believed to be a potential suspect in a red Volkswagen Jetta, according to sheriff’s spokesman Dave Reagan.

When the deputy tried to stop him, the Jetta’s driver sped away, Reagan said.

The chase ended at an apartment complex at 15800 E. Fourth with the driver jumping out of the car while it was still moving. The deputy said the Jetta jumped a sidewalk and came to a stop against a carport support pole.

The driver was found in an apartment at the complex and was identified as Christopher Glenn Watkins of 15821 E. Fourth. He was arrested and booked into jail for attempting to elude a police vehicle, a felony.

While the chase was going on, other deputies interviewed several residents of the apartment complex where the RAV 4 was stolen.

Deputies later arrested a 14-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy, both Valley residents, for first-degree possession of stolen property. They were booked into Spokane County Juvenile Detention.

The vehicle was recovered at an apartment complex in the 500 block of South Sullivan.
