Spokanite Wins Derby At Pend Oreille
Jerry Wilhelm of Spokane caught a 30.4-pound mackinaw to win the $10,000 grand prize in the Spring K&K challenge Derby at Lake Pend Oreille.
Wilhelm caught the mack on April 26, the first day of the derby. When the contest closed Sunday, the next-best fish was a 28.7-pound mack caught by Thomas Gerhart of Alameda, Calif.
The best rainbow was a 21.8-pounder by Van Sawyer of Sandpoint.
Wilhelm, who also caught the eighth-place mackinaw, was fishing with good company. His boat, the “Yellowjacket,” produced four derby winners, including a 22-pound mack taken by Jeff Wilhelm of Spokane and a 14.10-pound rainbow taken by Jerry Messner of Lind.
