Radio Pirates Hijack Kzzu Signal Again

From Staff And Wire Reports

A high-tech pirate who has managed to interrupt an FM radio station’s broadcasts with on-air obscenities continued the campaign Friday as federal officials investigated.

North Idaho listeners of KZZU first reported hearing a male voice break in on broadcasts and make brief, obscenity-laden comments on Monday.

Listeners around Spokane began calling the station Tuesday to report similar incidents, so the station asked the Federal Communications Commission for help tracking down the culprit.

On Friday, officials at the pop-music station - which bills itself as “The Zoo” - reported they heard someone interrupt a broadcast and say “The Zoo sucks buttermilk.”

It was believed to be the first time the radio pirate had interrupted the signal that reached station offices.

Investigators said the variety of locations where the signal has been interrupted apparently indicates the pirate has been using a mobile transmitter. Authorities believe the person may be using a homemade transmitter out of a car.

KZZU is offering $5,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case.
