Uptown Opera Performs Romantic Tale ‘The Ballad Of Baby Doe’

Travis Rivers

“Riches to rags and pathetic deaths” pretty much summarizes the story of Colorado silver king Horace Tabor and his beautiful, vivacious second wife, Elizabeth McCourt Doe Tabor - always known as Baby Doe. Starting tonight, Uptown Opera will give seven performances of Douglas Moore’s operatic treatment of their story, “The Ballad of Baby Doe.”

The opera is based on a true story Moore discovered reading of Baby Doe Tabor’s death in 1935 in New York newspapers. A commission from Central City Opera in Colorado enabled Moore to write the opera. This season marks the 40th anniversary of its premiere.

Uptown Opera’s production will feature soprano Camille Kowash as Baby Doe, baritone Robert Newman as Horace. Mezzo-soprano JoAnne Bouma will sing the role of Tabor’s first wife, Augusta, and Karen Noble will sing the role of Baby Doe’s mother, Mama McCourt. Scott Rednour will conduct.

Uptown Opera opens the run tonight at 8 at The Met. Other performances are Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday at 3 p.m., Tuesday at 8 p.m. and Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., and May 30 and 31, both at 8 p.m.

Tickets range from $14 to $26, $9 to $21 for children, students and seniors, available at G&B outlets or by calling 325-SEAT or (800) 325-SEAT.
