Mead Helps Gsl Save Face At Region Iv Tennis Tourney

(From Replay, May 27, 1997:) Travis LaSalle and Jason Jess of Ferris finished third in boys doubles at the AAA regional tennis tournament Saturday and qualified for state. Their result was left out of Sunday’s report.

Prep tennis

Mead’s Ryan Moran captured the Region IV-AAA boys singles tennis title at Kamiakin High School in Kennewick, and teammates Brett Kaiser and Tory Gambill won the doubles title to save face for the Greater Spokane League.

The GSL netted just three of the 12 berths to Springfest, next Friday and Saturday in Yakima.

Moran outgunned Kamiakin’s Steve Lewis 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 in the championship match.

Gambill and Kaiser were 6-4, 6-2 victors over Reid Wiggins and Ryan Parsons of Wenatchee in the finals.

Ferris’ Darcy Ruemping, the GSL’s No. 1 seed, was the lone girl to qualify for state.

Ruemping bested teammate Megan McKitterick 6-1, 6-0 to gain the No. 3 singles seed.

Kamiakin’s Katherne Martin topped Richland’s Lindsey Knott 6-3, 6-3 to win the singles title.

Kendra Leyda and Alecia Nelson of Gonzaga Prep finished fourth in girls doubles.

A/B district tournament

Medical Lake’s boys won the singles and doubles titles at the District 7-9 A/B tournament Saturday at Whitworth.

Josh Greene knocked off Lakeside’s Dave Dillingham 6-2, 6-0 in the boys singles title match, while Jeff Racicot and Josh Mastel topped Lakeside’s Camron Gardella and Nate Hickman 6-1, 6-4 in the doubles title match.

In girls action, Davenport’s Christine Dickson beat Sara Cotton of Medical Lake 6-2, 6-3 to win the singles title.

Odessa’s Desirae Melcher and Loni Watters placed first in doubles play with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Lakeside’s Melossa Judd and Tawny Handy.

LaCrosse-Washtucna’s Natalia Swenson and Allison Bryan finished third to qualify in doubles for next weekend’s A/B Springfest tournament in Spokane. Freeman’s Christina Graham and Lind’s Josh Parkins qualified in singles, while Wilbur-Creston’s Jason Kannberg and Michael Bahr qualified in boys doubles.
