Outsider Wins Turf Classic
Rainbow Dancer, a 19-1 long shot, overtook Sunshack and Marlin in the final strides to win the $400,000 Hollywood Turf Handicap by a neck at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, Calif.
Sunshack finished a nose ahead of Marlin, the 9-5 second choice. Sandpit, the 3-2 favorite after a third-place finish in last month’s Dubai World Cup, faded to last place in the field of six.
Langfuhr, carrying highweight of 122 pounds, beat Western Winter by a neck to win the $400,000 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park.
Ridden by Jorge Chavez, Langfuhr ran 1 mile in 1:33, one-fifth of a second off the stakes record posted by Honour and Glory last year. The 5-year-old Canadian-bred stallion paid $11.80 to win and earned $240,000 for owner Gustav Schickedanz.
