All-Star Football Saturday

The 13th annual District I-District II All-Star football game Saturday could be the best.

More than a half-dozen of the graduating seniors from both teams are headed for NCAA Division I programs next year.

District I (representing the schools in the five northern-most counties) topped District II (north-central schools near Lewiston) last year to even the series at six games apiece.

Kickoff on Saturday is at 3:30 p.m. at Viking Field.

The District I team could be renamed Sandpoint. One-third of the team - 14 players - is made up of Bulldogs.

Four of five Sandpoint offensive linemen are on the team, and they’ll be blocking for Bulldog teammate Jeremy Thielbahr, who is headed to Washington State.

The talented backfield also includes Post Falls’ Josh Mort.

Stanford-bound Austin Lee of Post Falls (tight end) will not play because he’s recovering from a shoulder injury. His father, Jerry, who resigned as head coach at Post Falls, will be coaching in his final game.

Post Falls has the second-most players (seven) on the team.

Lewiston, which won the State A-1 Division II championship, will be represented on the District II team with nine players.

Bengals quarterback Brad Rice and running back Laki Ah Hi will lead a versatile attack. Both are headed to the University of Idaho.

Moscow quarterback Adam Miller, who missed most of the season with a shoulder injury, leads six Bears on the team.

Cost is $4 for adults at the gate, $3 for students. Tickets are $3 when purchased in advance from a player.

All-league honors

Lake City senior baseball player Andy Potter was named Player of the Year in balloting for the all-Inland Empire League team. Potter hit .417 with nine home runs and 36 RBIs.

Joining Potter on the first team were five players on the league champion and State A-1 runner-up Coeur d’Alene Vikings. They are: Joe Wagner (first base), Ben Johnston (second base), Nick Rook (shortstop) and pitchers Scott Ross and Casey Hoorelbeke.

Others on the first team are: Jeff Brennan (pitcher) and Scott Moglia (third base) of LC; and Levi Frary (catcher), Matt Squires (outfield), Mike Mayton (outfield) and Ryan Heitman (pitcher) of Lewiston.

Two players off Lakeland’s State A-2 championship team were named to the all-Intermountain League’s first team.

Hawks Brian Holt (second base) and Ryan Banks (pitcher) were named first team along with Skyler Willard (infielder), Trent Duffey (outfielder) and D.J. Eberlin (catcher) of St. Maries, Tony Rinaldi (infielder), Evan Stewart (first base) and Travis Pool (pitcher) of Moscow, Rama Scarlett (outfielder) of Bonners Ferry and Zack Wood (outfielder) of Priest River.

Soccer champs

The Coeur d’Alene Sting U-18 girls team, comprised of players from Lake City and Coeur d’Alene high schools, captured a state title last weekend in State Cup matches in Boise.

The Sting will advance to the Far West regional tournament June 22-28 in Salt Lake City. The Sting defeated PVSC United of Pocatello 2-0 in the title game.

The Sting U-16 boys team also captured a state title and will advance to the regional tournament. It defeated the Boise Capitals 4-2.
