Rain Disrupts Nearly All Events In State Aa

From Staff And Wire Reports

Rain was the big winner at the AA Springfest on Friday.

Softball was completely washed out, less than one full game of baseball was played and the tennis tournament was forced indoors.

Because of steady showers, all 27 games in the girls Class AA-A-B fastpitch tournament at the South End Recreation Area were rescheduled for today, beginning at 9 a.m. Affected Spokane-area teams are West Valley, Colville and East Valley.

Tournament director Jim Meyerhoff said because of time constraints there will be no game played for third and fourth places.

If the rain persists, the tournament will be completed Monday, Meyerhoff said.

The first game of the four-team baseball tournament - Gig Harbor vs. Lake Stevens - started more than 2 hours late at 4:30 p.m. and was stopped at 6:15 with Gig Harbor leading 5-1 with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning.

That game will resume at 10 a.m. today, with the Cheney-Capital semifinal to begin approximately 1 hour after the finish of the first game. The final will begin about 4 p.m.

Frontier League entries managed just one victory in the tennis tournament, and Bernice Stiem of Riverside was ousted in the girls singles consolation round after making it to the quarterfinals.

She beat Dione Rasmusson of Hanford 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) in the first round before falling 6-1, 6-0 to Ndali Ijomah of Seattle Prep in the quarterfinals. Stiem then lost in a consolation-round match.

Losing their first two matches were Sharon Wentz of East Valley in girls singles and Katie Huberty-Melanie Zollars of Pullman and Marci Konrad-Lacey Abel of Clarkston in girls doubles. Also losing were Keli Heidenson of West Valley and Ryan Monroe of Riverside in boys singles and the boys doubles teams of Bryan Eggart and Chung-Wei Kuo of Cheney and Herb Boreson-Mark Andrews of Clarkston.
