Pet Shelters Make Deal To Save More Animals Humane Society To Accept Strays From Spokane County

Adopt-a-pooch just got a boost.

A new partnership between two Spokane pet shelters will expand animal adoptions, potentially saving at least five dogs and cats each week.

The Humane Society of Spokane expects to fill its unexpectedly empty kennels with strays from the crowded Spokane County Animal Control shelter.

Without the Humane Society’s help, the county shelter would have to kill the animals, said Nancy Sattin, the county’s chief animal control officer.

More than 700 dogs and 1,000 cats suffered that fate last year.

“Hopefully, this (partnership) will be saving animals,” Sattin said.

No money will change hands as a result of the deal struck Friday. Humane Society workers will begin taking dogs from the county’s Valley shelter on Tuesday, Sattin said.

Space became available in the Humane Society’s kennels last week when the agency stopped taking in strays picked up in the city due to a contract dispute.

Susan Canterbury, Humane Society director, said the shelter lost nearly $11,000 per month under its city contract, which expired Wednesday.

Negotiations for a new contract are underway, and SpokAnimal CARE has agreed to take in some city strays during the interim.

Sattin called Friday’s announced partnership “only a short-term solution” to the problem of unwanted cats and dogs.

“People need to know about spaying and neutering their animals,” she said.
