East Valley Sweeps Clarkston

East Valley began defense of its Frontier League volleyball title Tuesday with a 15-13, 15-5, 15-9 decision over visiting Clarkston.

Kristin Holleran’s three kills and Tricia Stookey’s serving helped the Knights tie the first game at 13 after trailing 13-8. Holleran served out the game, including an ace.

Chantelle Frost had six of her 16 kills and six of her eight blocks in the second game as West Valley rebounded over visiting Cheney 13-15, 15-7, 15-4, 15-8 in the other Frontier opener.

WV’s Cameron Ouellette added 11 kills.

Erin Naipo had 31 kills in 37 attempts as Lewis and Clark (8-4) outlasted host Rogers 12-15, 15-7, 13-15, 15-9, 15-8 to break a three-way tie for third place in the Greater Spokane League.

Carlin Oeljen added 12 kills and Meghan Sanborn nine for LC, which trailed the fourth game 8-6 before rallying and scoring six consecutive points in the final game for a 12-5 edge. Monica Abrahamson, Malea Wright and Angel Fairbanks combined for 41 of the Pirates’ 48 kills.

Janelle Morrisette served six consecutive points in the second game and host Ferris (11-1) scored a 15-7, 15-2, 15-8 win over injury-riddled Shadle Park (7-5).

Ferris’ Missy Blackshire, Julie Weatherred and Amy George combined for 25 kills. Shadle, missing middle blocker Michelle Etter because of a sprained ankle, lost middle Amy Miller with a sprained ankle in the first game.

Abby Hornstein served six points and Krista Nelson added three blocks in the first game of Mead’s 15-1, 15-7, 15-8 win over visiting Gonzaga Prep (4-8). The Panthers (12-0) play two league matches at Saturday’s Crossover Classic, then travel to Ferris on Tuesday.

Lisa VandeVanter served six consecutive points for a 13-3, first-game lead and visiting University (4-8) defeated Mt. Spokane 15-3, 15-5, 15-11. The Wildcats (0-12) led the third game 7-4 and ultimately forced the Titans into six sideouts for match point.

Dawn Stangland served five consecutive points in the first game to help Central Valley (6-6) to a 15-9, 15-4, 15-9 win over visiting North Central (1-11). NC’s Alice Stearns, Nicole Bostic and Amber Carter combined for 22 digs.

Alison McGrane, Erin Anderson and Lindsey Braff served big points as Colville (8-0) defeated visiting Newport 15-8, 15-13, 15-3 and stopped the Grizzlies (7-2) from assuming the Great Northern League lead.

Colville led the first game 10-8 when McGrane served three consecutive points. Melissa Wollan’s third kill of the game ended the opener. Anderson served three consecutive aces in the second game after a 6-0 Indians lead had been trimmed to 11-9. Wollan had six kills in the game. Colville jumped ahead 7-0 in the third game, which ended on six consecutive Braff serves, two for aces.

Chrissy Oneal totaled 24 kills and eight blocks as Chewelah (4-4) defeated visiting Lakeside 15-11, 15-9, 10-15, 17-15 to create a three-way tie with the Eagles for third place. Match point came on a double-hit call against Lakeside’s setter.

Pullman joined the three-way knot with a 15-7, 15-4, 15-9 win at Medical Lake (2-6). Pullman’s Julie Lewis had 18 kills and 12 digs.

Deer Park (4-5) is another half-game back after a 16-14, 10-15, 15-3, 15-3 win over visiting Riverside (0-8). Riverside led the first game 12-5 and 14-11, but reserve Lindsay Stafford had two kills and Kacey Kinder added two aces to start a rally.

Girls soccer

Serena Erickson’s first goal of the year, from 20 yards out, allowed Colville (3-2-2) to tie visiting Deer Park at 1. Lisa Pansie scored her seventh league goal for the Stags (1-3-3), who lost to Colville 2-1 four weeks ago.

At Medical Lake, Jamie Rizzuto scored every goal to take over the league scoring lead as Riverside (7-0-0) notched a 3-0 win over the Cardinals (2-2-3).

Rizzuto has 15 goals, two more than teammate Larissa Mueller. Two of the goals deflected off ML players.

Lakeside didn’t report its match with Chewelah.

Cross country

Lakeside (4-0), top-ranked among 2A boys teams, packed its seven runners within 54 seconds in defeating Chewelah (2-2) and Medical Lake (1-2) in a GNL meet at Nine Mile School.

Lakeside’s Mike Witt broke from a pack to finish the 3 miles in 16 minutes, 34 seconds. Chewelah had no runner in the top 10 but topped ML 22-33.

Chewelah (2-2) won the girls three-way, as three teammates bunched up within 39 seconds of runner-up Michelle Kinley (21:54). Connie Williams (20:59), who won her first race, led Lakeside (2-2) over ML (1-2).

At Newport, the host Grizzlies swept visiting Pullman (both 0-3) on a 3.1-mile course. Pullman’s Seth Burkett ran 17:52 for a 2-second boys win. Fourth-place Rick Reneer’s 18:51 led Newport (1-2). Sarah Bell (2-1) ran 21:22 to lead a 1-4 girls showing for the Grizzlies (2-1).

Riverside didn’t report its meet with Colville and Deer Park.
