These Food Contests Are A Real Snap

Rick Bonino Food Editor

If you’ve got a camera, and a kid, here are a couple of food contests you might want to check out:

Kraft is looking for a few cute kids to picture on its macaroni and cheese boxes in celebration of the child-friendly food’s 60th anniversary.

To enter, kids 12 and under must send a 3- by 5-inch color photo showing their “cheesiest” smile, along with a story (50 words or less), slogan or rhyme (10 words or less) or drawing (8 by 11 inches) describing why “I want the Blues” (why Kraft macaroni and cheese is their favorite). Entries should also include the child’s complete name, birthdate, address and phone number hand-printed on a 3- by 5-inch piece of paper.

Twelve grand prize winners - four each from the age groups 6 and under, 7-9 and 10-12 - will appear on the front of the box and receive a college scholarship and family vacation to Orlando, Fla. Another 60 finalists will make the back of the box, and win cameras.

Send entries by Nov. 30 to Kraft “I Want The Blues” Contest, P.O. Box 7521, Melville, NY 11775-7521.

Pepperidge Farm is seeking the best picture of a child enjoying Goldfish crackers. The grand prize is $25,000. Photos must be sent, along with two proofs-of-purchase from Goldfish crackers, by Nov. 30 to Smiley Photo Contest, P.O. Box 696, Bellmawr, N.J. 08099-0696. See specially marked packages or in-store displays for complete rules.

Easy as pie

Results are in from the Bolla Best Four-Course Pizza Meal contest, and the top finishers include - you guessed it - prolific prize-winner Edwina Gadsby of Great Falls, Mont.

Her Panzanella Pizza, topped after baking with a tomato-and-cucumber mixture, took first place in the salad category, earning Gadsby a trip to Las Vegas for the 1998 Pizza Expo. (Maybe she could gamble some of those other contest winnings and really hit it big!)

For those of you with Internet access, all the winning recipes are available at www.bolla.com.

Beer-belly laughs

Oktoberfest means beer, food and … comedy?

That’s the lineup for the First Annual Micro Brew Ha Ha! on Saturday from 1 p.m. to midnight at the German-American Society Building, 25 W. Third. Along with beer from regional microbreweries and bratwurst and deli items from Tidyman’s, there’s a day-long competition among area comedians for a $1,500 prize.

Tickets are $5, which includes comedy show admission and a 6-ounce souvenir glass. Drink coupons are $1 each, with proceeds benefiting the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
