WSU’s Wilson Gets First Win
Washington State University’s Kelly Wilson captured her first individual collegiate golf title at the Lady Lumberjack Invitational golf tournament in Flagstaff, Ariz., Tuesday.
Heavy rain canceled the third and final round of play. Wilson’s rounds of 69 and 82 in the first two rounds gave her a one-stroke victory over Lisa Chang of Pepperdine.
The WSU women’s team finished third, behind champion Northern Arizona and second-place Wyoming.
Washington State’s men’s golf team finished 18th at the Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore., Tuesday, moving up one spot on the leaderboard on the final day of the two-day Nike Northwest Invitational.
The Cougars’ Jeremy Champoux and Jeremy Taylor both shot team low scores of 73 on the par-72 course on the final day. Champoux was the top finisher for the Cougars, tied for 49th. WSU’s team score was 908, 47 shots behind repeat-champion Brigham Young University.
The University of Washington finished tied for fourth.
WSU competes in the Coca-Cola Intercollegiate tournament in Las Cruces, N.M, today through Saturday.
Cougar earns soccer honors
Washington State University freshman soccer player Deka DeWitt has been named player of the week in the Pac-10 Conference.
DeWitt scored two goals last weekend in Cougars road wins at Louisville and Kentucky. She leads the team in goals (4) and points (9).
Dewitt, out of Auburn, Wash., is the second Cougars player to earn conference player of the week honors. Goalkeeper Jessica Glazer was honored last season.
Lindeblad team rebounds
A team captained by Gary Lindeblad came from behind on the third day of the IEPGA Professional Cup tournament at the Coeur D’Alene Resort Tuesday to defeat the team captained by Bob Scott 12-1/2 to 11-1/2.
The Lindeblad team’s win was anchored by the individual match wins of Steve Nelke, Ron Barker and Clint Wallman.
Players going undefeated in the three-day tournament were Nelke of Hangman Valley GC, Barker of Ritzville, Mark Gardner of The Creek at Qualchan, and Scott Petterborg of Hangman Valley.
Volleyball
Community Colleges of Spokane rallied after an opening-game loss to defeat host North Idaho College Tuesday night in women’s volleyball.
North Idaho won the first game 15-10, but CCS rebounded to defeat NIC in the next three games 15-13, 15-10 and 15-10.
CCS was led by Shannon Nelson’s 23 kills, Joene Heimbigner’s 50 assists and Kristina McAuley’s 18 digs. Eileen Daniels had four blocks.
NIC was led by Jen Clark’s nine kills, Melissa Nardinger’s 36 assists and Ali Gargus’ 27 digs. Jessica Waltz had 14 blocks. < Soccer
Katie Snow had three goals and Holly Vanwert one goal and two assists to lead Community Colleges of Spokane over Columbia Basin 5-1 at Spokane Community College.
CCS (6-0-1) also got a goal from Keri Nichols. The next game for the Sasquatch will be Saturday at Skagit Valley. Sunday, CCS will be at Green River CC.
